We are honored that you would consider taking the step of membership here at Anchor Church. You can expect that by the time you have completed this form, you will have a good idea if you meet the requirements for becoming a member. If you are new to the idea of membership, or you would simply like to know more about our position on membership, we want to take a brief moment and explain the position.

As members of Anchor Church, you are committing to help set the tone and culture of this community. It comes with some specific responsibilities, which you will read more about in a moment, but it also comes with additional leadership. We, as the leadership team, will look to you in continuing to help build a welcoming, Christ honoring community at Anchor.

We have copied an excerpt from our Bylaws regarding membership to provide some further details on the responsibilities members hold:

ARTICLE SEVEN Members
Section 1. Definition

Members shall be all people who have placed their faith in Jesus, served (through serving in any area of ministry or through giving financially) at Anchor Church at least once in the last six months, and agree to Anchor Church’s Statement of Faith.

Should six months pass without a record of service or a member no longer agrees with the Statement of Faith, membership is automatically terminated. In the event that an individual wishes to no longer be a member at Anchor Church, they may voluntarily step down from their position and inform Anchor Church leadership of this decision.

In addition, all Members of Anchor Church agree to living a life in line with the teaching and message of the Scriptures and, in short, agree to live a life worthy of the gospel of Christ (Philippians 1:27). Any member of Anchor Church found to be living a life of habitual sin, unrepentant, and hardened in heart shall be considered for dismissal from membership and subject to Anchor Church’s Member Disciplinary policy. The process of member discipline within Anchor Church is explained more fully in Anchor Church’s Member Discipline policy. Said resource provides additional explanation but shall not be incorporated into these Bylaws by reference, nor shall it replace the text above. In the event of any disagreement of the linked document with these Bylaws, the Bylaws shall prevail.

Member Discipline Policy

When disciplinary action is needed on the basis of a Member being accused of sin accompanied by an unrepentant attitude, hardened heart, or the habitual natural of such a sin, the biblical pattern generally outlined in Matthew 18:15-17 will be followed.

“If another believer sins against you, go privately and point out the offense. If the other person listens and confesses it, you have won that person back. But if you are unsuccessful, take on or two others with you and go back again, so that everything you say may be confirmed by two or three witnesses. If the person still refuses to listen, take your case to the church. Then if he or she won’t accept the church’s decision, treat that person as a pagan or a corrupt tax collector.”

A person who sins, or is accused of sinning, in such a matter will be confronted in an initial one-on-one meeting. The hope is that the conflict can be solved between the two parties, and resolution and reconciliation will take place. If reconciliation is not achieved, there will be escalating engagement by ministerial and pastoral staff and finally by the Elders of Anchor Church.

Where the steps of discipline are exhausted in cases of unrepentant and/or habitual sin and the accused party shows no signs of sorrow, remorse, or repentance, the Elders will consider removing a person from membership with the hope of eventual reconciliation and restoration. This removal may or may not include a prohibition to attend Church services and events, depending on the circumstances. The Elders have full discretion to handle the situation as they deem appropriate, relying on the Spirit and Scriptures as their guide. In addition, it might include public disclosure of removal from membership and the circumstances leading to this decision to the corporate membership of the Church. Those so disciplined will in turn be restored to fellowship where the Elders have determined that appropriate repentance has occurred. In such a case, the Elders may choose to give, or withhold from, the individual the opportunity to become a Member of Anchor Church. The aim of all discipline, however, is restoration and reconciliation.

We believe it is the biblical position that marriage involves the union of one man to one woman in a permanent, sacred covenant. While culture and customs have changed regarding marriage through the ages, God’s position on the matter, expressed through His Word, is the ultimate authority (Genesis 2:24, Matthew 19:1-9, Mark 10:1-12). As such, we believe that it is sinful for a man and a woman to engage in any sexual activity prior to entering a covenant of marriage (Hebrews 13:4; Matthew 19:4-5).

Additionally we believe that being same sex active, whether in or out of the context of marriage, falls into the category of sin. We do believe in a distinction between being same sex attracted (attracted to your same sex) and same sex active (actively engaging in sexual behaviors with your same sex). While one can be same sex attracted and not be actively participating in sin, we believe those who are same sex active are participating in a lifestyle of sin.

Finally, we believe that the viewing and consumption of pornographic material is detrimental to one’s emotional and spiritual wellbeing and is an act of sexual sin. Pornography can wreak havoc in relationships and marriages and generally is a destructive force that distorts and perverts God’s intended desire and design for human sexuality and flourishing.

On the matter of gender, we believe that the action of altering one’s biological sex, whether by surgery, hormonal treatment, or in any other way is not in alignment with God’s original plan and design for humanity.

We believe these convictions are based upon God’s will for human life as conveyed to us through the Scriptures, upon which Anchor Church has been founded and anchored.

This statement on Marriage and Sexuality does not provide ground for bigotry, bullying, or hate, as we believe that every person is created in the image of God and must be afforded compassion, love, kindness, respect, and dignity (John 13:35; Colossians 3:14; 1 Peter 4:8; Romans 5:8). Hateful and harassing behavior or attitudes directed toward any individual will not be tolerated, and are not in accordance with the Scriptures, the person of Jesus, nor the values of Anchor Church.

ANCHOR STATEMENT OF FAITH

- GOD

We believe that there is only one God who eternally exists as three distinct persons: God the Father, God the Son (Jesus), and God the Holy Spirit. (Matthew 28:19, Genesis 1:26, Deuteronomy 6:4)

- JESUS

We believe that Jesus Christ is God the Son who came to live on earth as 100% God and 100% man. (Philippians 2:6–11)

The Scriptures declare:
Jesus was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. (Matthew 1:23, Luke 1:31, Luke 1:35)

Jesus lived a sinless life. (Hebrews 7:26, 1 Peter 2:22)

Jesus performed miracles. (Acts 2:22, Acts 10:38)

Jesus died on a cross, atoning the sins of all who believe in Him as a substitutionary sacrifice. (1 Peter 3:18, Hebrews 2:9, Romans 5:9, 1
Corinthians 15:3, 2 Corinthians 5:21)

Jesus rose from the dead in bodily form. (Matthew 28:6, Luke 24:39, 1 Corinthians 15:4)

Jesus ascended to the right hand of the Father. (Acts 1:11, Acts 2:33, Philippians 2:9-11, Hebrews 1:3)

Jesus indwells all believers, making Him the Lord of their lives as well as Savior. (John 1:12, John 14:17, 23, John 15:4, Romans 8:11,
Revelation 3:20)

Jesus will return again in power to finalize His kingdom, righteousness and peace. (Matthew 26:64, Revelation 20:7-15, Revelation 21:1-5)

- THE HOLY SPIRIT

We believe that the Holy Spirit is completely God and indwells within those who put their faith in Jesus. We believe that the baptism of the Holy Spirit, given at Pentecost, is a gift from the Father to empower believers to be witnesses of the gospel throughout the whole earth. The gifts of the Holy Spirit that we see on display in the New Testament are still active within the life of the church today (Joel 2:28-29, Matthew 3:11, Mark 16:17, Acts 1:5-8; 2:1-4, 17, 38, 39; 8:14-17; 10:38, 44-47; 11:15-17; 19:1-6, 1 Corinthians 12:1-11)

- THE BIBLE

We believe that the Old and New Testaments, inerrant as originally given, are inspired by God and are completely trustworthy and authoritative in all matters of faith and practice. (Proverbs 30:5, Romans 16:25-26, 2 Timothy 3:15-17, 2 Peter 1:20-21)

- THE STATE OF HUMANKIND

We believe that God created humanity in His own image and designed each one to live in relationship with Him. (Genesis 1:27-30)

Because of disobedience, humanity fell, incurring thereby both physical and spiritual death. All men and women are born with a sinful nature, are separated from the life of God, and can be saved only through the atoning work of Jesus. (Genesis 3:6, Romans 3:23)

We believe that after living one life on earth all humankind will experience resurrection and judgment. Those who have believed in the gospel of Jesus will receive the gift of an eternity in the presence of God. (Matthew 5:12, 2 Corinthians 5:1, Hebrews 11:16, 1 Peter 1:4)

Those who have not believed in the gospel of Jesus will experience eternal separation from the presence of God, which is hell. (Matthew 25:41, Mark 9:43-48, Hebrews 9:27, Revelation 14:9-11; 20:12-15; 21:8)

- THE SALVATION OF HUMANITY

We believe that salvation is available to all, and given by grace through faith. Salvation is received through the prompting and indwelling of the Holy Spirit, repentance toward the Father and faith in Jesus. (Luke 24:47, John 3:3, Romans 8:16, Romans 10:13-15, 2 Corinthians 1:22, Ephesians 1:13-14, Ephesians 2:8)

The evidence of salvation is a life of pursuing righteousness and growing in the Fruit of the Spirit. (Galatians 5:22-23, Ephesians 4:24, Titus 2:12)

- HEALING

We believe that provision for healing is given to humanity through the redemptive work of Jesus. Prayer for the sick and anointing with oil are taught in the Scriptures and are privileges for the Church in this present age. (Psalm 103:2-3, Isaiah 53:5, Matthew 8:16-17, 1 Corinthians 12:9,28, James 5:14-16)

- THE CHURCH

We believe that the Church is the Body of Christ and finds its ultimate purpose in worshiping God and making disciples. (Matthew 28:19-20, 1 Corinthians 12:12-31)
